Critical Illness Cover:
A critical illness can affect anyone at any age and can turn lives upside down. In the event of being unable to work due to a critical illness, having a back-up plan in place can alleviate some of the financial stress of the situation.
What is Critical Illness Cover?
Critical illness cover is a form of insurance that provides financial protection for you and your family if you are diagnosed with a critical illness during the term of the policy. The benefit is typically a tax-free cash lump sum which can be used to help with childcare costs, household bills or to help maintain your standard of living if you’re forced to take time off work to recover, thereby providing peace of mind and financial stability.
Critical illness cover is often taken out as an add on to a Life insurance policy, however, it can also be taken out as a stand-alone policy. As with life cover policies, cover can be on decreasing, level or an increasing basis. There is no cash in value at any time and cover will end when the premium payment stops.
Which Illness’s are Classed as Critical?
The list of illnesses covered is wide ranging and covers many types of cancer, heart attack and stroke. The illnesses covered does vary from insurer to insurer, which also include partial or full payments dependant on the seriousness of the illness, therefore, we strongly advise you to seek professional advice before taking out a critical illness policy to ensure that full cover is provided.
Children’s Critical Illness Cover
Some policies will automatically provide children’s critical illness cover, which can also be enhanced, ensuring the highest level of cover is provided, whilst others allow this benefit to be added or removed when required. If your child is diagnosed with a critical illness that is listed in the providers plan, then the provider will pay out a lump sum to you, to help support your family during that time. Your child is normally covered from birth to the age of 21.
